Speaker: Sophie Soklaridis, PhD
Reported by: Robert D’Antuono, MHA, CE News Editorial Team

Dr. Sophie Soklaridis opened the 48th SACME Annual Meeting, March 11-13 in San Diego by sharing a very poignant story of a personal work experience. This experience would forever influence and guide her professional work to promote the integration of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) principles into academic teaching and the daily practice of medicine. Medical schools are struggling to implement DEI principles into CPD learning activities using various creative and effective strategies. Dr. Soklaridis emphasized that “The thing we all have to remember is there is no point where any of this will ever be uncomplicated or straightforward. Simple is an exclusive affordance to the people who oppose it”.
Following Dr. Soklaridis was a robust discussion by the audience. The discussion focused on addressing these three questions:
- How can you create learning environments that embrace DEI?
- How can you integrate DEI principles into learning activities?
- How can you incorporate diverse perspectives into the curriculum?
To appreciate this extraordinary lecture and value-added discussion which followed, we are providing you with a direct link to the session video recording (right). A written summary would not be sufficient to capture the heart and soul of this controversial topic of the day. We leave it to our readers with interest to listen and hopefully learn from the story Dr. Soklaridis relates in this, our 2024 Barbara Barnes Keynote Address.
