The SACME Technology-Enhanced Continuing Professional Development (TECPD) Committee is pleased to share that a draft article, “Integrating Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Continuing Professional Development: A Theoretical Framework,” has been posted on a PrePrint server. This work, co-authored by 8 members of the Committee, represents an ongoing effort to brainstorm and refine conceptual tools that can help us enhance CPD practices—making them better, faster, less prone to error – and more human-centric.

The draft introduces the ALEERRT-CA framework, which highlights 6 foundational pillars: AI Literacy, Explainability, Ethics, Readiness, Reliability, and Learning Theories. These are paired with two theoretical lenses—Complexity Theory and Actor-Network Theory—to guide discussions on how AI can interact with the broader socio-technical systems that define healthcare CPD.

While technology offers exciting opportunities, this work focuses on the human element. The framework emphasizes the need to design CPD initiatives around the needs of learners, CPD practitioners, and the broader social context—not around technology itself. By doing so, we hope to support the continuous development of AI-enhanced CPD systems that are human-centered, ethical, and effective.

We view this as the beginning of a broader conversation. The insights shared in the draft are not final solutions but rather an invitation to collaborate, share ideas, and collectively shape the future of CPD. We look forward to hearing your thoughts and engaging in dialogue about how these ideas can be further developed to meet the needs of our community. The draft is available for your review here: http://doi.org/10.2196/preprints.69156. To provide feedback on the draft or to join the TECPD committee, please get in touch with info@sacme.org.
