From the Editor – The View from the Balcony

As we navigate change in these challenging times, it is easy to not “see the forest for the trees”. That common expression refers to the tendency many of us have to get caught up in the details and, in so doing, to lose focus on the big picture. CE News Editor Ginny Jacobs recalls the messaging emphasized in adaptive leadership programs which calls for us to “get on the balcony” in order to gain an appropriate perspective and to make better informed decisions.

QI – CPD: Education as Infrastructure

It is extremely important to integrate educational opportunities into Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives from the onset. In this article, Natalie Sanfratello details a program designed to enhance cognitive screening for older adults in a family medicine clinic. By actively involving frontline clinicians and responding to their feedback, the program transformed them into active partners rather than passive observers, ultimately enhancing the success of the QI efforts.

Scholarly Project Opportunity: Care to Join the SACME ListServ Research Collaborative?

The SACME listserv, active since 2004, serves as a platform for problem-solving and resource exchange among CME/CPD members. A qualitative study will analyze 22 years of thematic changes in dialogues, transitioning from compliance to scholarship and intelligence eras. With AI tools aiding analysis, SACME invites all members, especially early-career researchers, to participate and contribute to the project, enhancing understanding of evolving CME/CPD issues and methodologies.

Virtual Research Roundtable (VRR) – How to Conduct a Delphi Study

Virtual Research Roundtables (VRRs) explore methods for conducting scholarship in CPD/CE as they seek to enhance and expand our skills and capacity to answer interesting questions in our field.
In a session conducted in July, Giuseppe Aleo, Ph.D. from the Royal College of Surgeions in Ireland (RCSI) presented a session on “How to Conduct a Delphi Study”. In this article, Jessica Walter, Ed.D., MA, Chair of SACME’s Scholarship Committee, provides a brief summary of that session.

Participants engaged through a conference app, echoing a hyflex format blending in-person and online interactions. This evolution prompts questions about competence definitions in contexts rich with technology, and how performance data can inform continuing professional development while addressing privacy and governance issues.
